General Seed Questions
An expiration date or freshness date for the packaged seed, are NOT printed on the packages.
The numbers you see stamped on a Lyric bag, are not a product expiration date. These numbers represent a manufacture date code so that in the event that there is an issue identified with any package, we are able to determine when/where it was manufactured.
Bird seed should be stored in a sealed bag or in a clean, dry container with lid (Sturdy plastic bins and galvanized metal cans are popular birdseed storage containers) - in a cool dry place. This is essential to maintain freshness and deter pests from gaining access.
Lyric Delite No-Waste Mix, Lyric Fine Tunes No-Waste Mix, Lyric Woodpecker No-Waste Mix, Lyric Peanut Pieces and Lyric Sunflower Kernels are considered No-Waste items.
In an attempt to increase the weight of a bag of bird seed, versus the price charged - some manufacturers will include filler seed which birds simply toss aside with disinterest. So, it may feel like you’re getting more for your money based on a cost per pound calculation, but you are really not getting a better value. Filler seed can be Golden Millet, Red Millet, Flax, and Others. Make sure to read the ingredients lists on birdseed mixtures, avoiding those with these seeds – as you’re simply paying for bulk. If a seed mix has many small red seed – confirm they are milo or sorghum and not red millet, as red millet is considered a filler.
At Lyric Wild Bird Food, we do not consider corn to be a filler ingredient. It is supplied in our blends in small amounts to attract birds who enjoy it, while not overbearing the blend as a whole. Corn is a desired feed option for many popular bird varieties, such as chickadees, Blue Jays, woodpeckers, and Northern Cardinals. Sit back and watch them enjoy!
Depending on the bag size purchased, the bag plastics type will vary as either a 4 or 7 recycling classification. If showing a 4 LDPE plastics, please note that products made using LDPE plastic are reusable, but not always recyclable. You need to check with your local collection service to see if they are accepting LDPE plastic items for recycling.
No, Lyric Wild Bird Food products do not contain neonicotinoid insecticides.
If you see webbing inside a package before it has been opened or moth activity in and around the bag, it is a good indication that the bag seal has been compromised and the seed inside has spoiled. This is also the case if the bird seed is clumping, is discolored or appears to be moldy. While we do our best to ensure our Lyric bird seed finds its way to your home in a manner that keeps it as fresh as possible – there are some circumstances in handling and during transit that are out of our control and the packages may become damaged so our freshness barriers are broken. If you see anything that looks like webbing, moths or spoiling - - DO NOT feed the product to your feathered friends, but return to location of purchase for refund or replacement.
A white color/ hue on your bird food is generally an indication of mold or mildew developing inside the bag. Moldy seed can show mold or fungus growth, discoloration or a musty smell. Mold and mildew can be fatal to birds. If the seed feels soft or slimy, this is a sign that mold spores are present. Consider this a red flag that the seed should NOT be used and return to store where purchased if this is the first time opening the package, or discard the product if it has been sitting unused.
The answer to this question, can be found either on the back of each individual package, or the individual product listing here on our website.
If the seed bag has not been compromised (no holes or tears) and product is stored correctly, Lyric Bird Food can be expected to have a shelf-life of approximately 2-3 years.
If sealed and properly stored in a dry, cool location - an opened bag of Lyric Wild Bird Food can be expected to last well over a year without becoming unsuitable for the birds.
The square white packet in the bag is called an oxygen scavenger or oxygen absorber. They are added to the packaging to help remove or decrease the level of oxygen in the package which helps maintain product freshness and extend shelf life. Please discard the inserted oxygen scavenger packet upon opening the bag. The packet and its contents are not edible.
The Stay Fresh Technology packets included in bird food bags less than 15 pounds are oxygen absorbers used to keep your bird food fresh before opening. These packets are of the ‘iron’ type and may be toxic to animals. For more information, reference the SDS sheet here, or visit this link for further detail. For optimum safety, when you open your bird food, please throw this packet away.
We use both types of peanuts in our blends, depending on ingredient availability.
